The footage, first shared by a local Manaus account and quickly racking up millions of views, captures the shirtless boy in shorts lying back on the white foam lid as it drifts in the water near a wooden boat. The reptile, several feet long with distinctive armored skin, rests motionless next to him. At one point, the boy even reaches over and adjusts or pulls the animal closer, appearing completely relaxed the entire time.
The clip originates from the Manaus area in Brazil’s Amazonas state, where rivers teem with caimans, the South American cousins of alligators that can grow large and pack a powerful bite. Locals and online commenters immediately reacted with a mix of disbelief and dark humor. One viewer wrote that the kid treated the predator “like the family dog.” Others joked about the “refrigerator raft” and the mother’s supposed warnings.
Wildlife experts have long warned that caimans, even smaller ones, remain dangerous wild animals capable of sudden aggression. Close encounters like this are extremely risky, especially for children. Some sharp-eyed observers noting the complete lack of movement from the reptile have suggested the animal may already be dead, which would explain the boy’s casual handling, though that does little to make the scene less unsettling.
