A tourist so glued to his phone call that he didn’t flinch when a full-grown brown bear walked up and gently bit his calf has set the internet on fire and left wildlife experts shaking their heads in disbelief.
The jaw-dropping 45-second dashcam clip, captured July 26 on Romania’s legendary Transfăgărășan highway, shows the man in a black T-shirt, black shorts and sneakers casually standing on the narrow, winding forested road next to a dark gray Ford SUV (license plate PH 33 HAN) and a white car. A white camper van idles farther up the steep, tree-lined curve with rocky cliffs looming in the background.
Suddenly a large brown bear emerges from behind the SUV. The curious bruin ambles right up to the oblivious guy, sniffs around his legs, then gently bites his calf, mouthing the flesh in a soft, almost playful nibble. The man? Completely locked in on his phone conversation, hands near his waist, not budging an inch as the apex predator tests him at arm’s length. He doesn’t jump, doesn’t yell, doesn’t even glance down.
The bear rears slightly on its hind legs for a better look, circles the bumper like it’s checking for snacks, then ducks low near the vehicle. Only after lingering for what feels like forever does the tourist finally glance over, do a double-take and shuffle toward the open car door.
The bear, still non-aggressive and almost playful, wanders off as the dashcam vehicle (filming from behind) creeps forward. No one gets mauled. No one even panics. The whole surreal standoff ends with the man sliding into safety.
Social media went full roast mode. “That kid still wanted to play,” one commenter joked about the bear. Another cracked: “Steel calves or what?” A third simply asked how the guy “even lived to that age.” Others called it peak phone addiction: “Bro was deep in the group chat while Yogi gently chomped his ankle and he didn’t even blink.”
Romania’s Carpathian Mountains are home to one of Europe’s densest brown bear populations, thousands of the powerful animals roam the forests along the hairpin-filled Transfăgărășan, a scenic route famous for its dramatic elevation changes and frequent wildlife sightings.
Experts constantly warn tourists not to stop, not to feed and never to ignore their surroundings. This close call, captured from a following vehicle, is a textbook (and terrifyingly funny) example of what happens when you do.
The man walked away unharmed. The bear, by all accounts a younger, curious specimen rather than an aggressive adult, simply wanted a closer and slightly more hands-on look. But one wrong move on that remote mountain stretch and this “important conversation” could have ended with a very different final message.
Stay off the phone in bear country, folks. Mother Nature doesn’t care how good the reception is.
