A loose tire turned into a high-speed highway projectile on Wednesday afternoon, bouncing over a concrete median and smashing into an SUV with devastating force on one of Philadelphia’s busiest roadways.
The wild incident unfolded around 12:30 p.m. on the westbound Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) near the Girard Avenue exit. Video obtained from a Tesla driver’s onboard cameras shows the large tire suddenly appearing, hurtling across the median, and slamming directly into the front of a dark gray Nissan SUV traveling in the left lane.
The impact crumpled the vehicle’s hood and shattered the windshield, leaving the front end of the SUV looking as if it had been hit by a missile. Multiple angles of the footage circulating online capture the tire’s violent trajectory in real time, with the Nissan continuing briefly before the damage becomes fully apparent.
A Tesla driver traveling ahead told local reporters he heard a loud impact but did not immediately realize what had occurred until he reviewed his vehicle’s camera footage later. The video clearly shows the tire bouncing over the barrier at high speed just seconds before striking the Nissan.
Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the origin of the runaway tire. Authorities have not yet determined which vehicle it came from, though its size has led some observers to suggest it may have detached from a commercial truck, and no official information has been released about whether anyone inside the SUV was injured.
