A spearfisher’s routine outing took a wild turn when the octopus he just caught refused to go down without a fight — latching onto his back with its powerful tentacles and refusing to let go.
The dramatic footage, captured in the shallow waters off Kochi, Japan, shows the man struggling in the surf as the octopus grips his upper back and shoulders with dozens of suckers. Wearing only yellow shorts and a watch, the shirtless angler twists and reaches behind himself, grabbing the creature’s body in an effort to pry it loose while dark ink streams down his skin and mixes into the water.
According to the man who recorded the encounter, identified only as Day J in the video’s licensing details, the incident unfolded on January 1, 2026, during a spearfishing trip.
“I was out spear fishing when I caught an octopus. We started struggling, and it tried to protect itself by latching onto my back,” he explained. “We were in the water at first, but I eventually managed to bring it up onto the land.”
The video shows him working methodically in the shallows and along the sandy edge, carefully peeling the arms free one by one. Small fish dart around in the clear water as the octopus holds firm before finally releasing its grip. The dark fluid visible throughout is the animal’s defensive ink, a harmless, non-toxic cloud meant to confuse predators, not a sign of venom.
Experts note that common octopuses are intelligent and highly reactive when threatened. Their suckers can generate significant force, making them difficult to dislodge once attached, but encounters like this rarely result in serious injury for humans. The man appears unharmed beyond temporary suction marks and ink stains.
