A young Nigerian man died after a reckless bet with friends left him crushed under the weight of four heavy bags of cement.

Gbenga, whose full name has not been widely reported, accepted a dare to balance the 200kg load – nearly three times the weight of an average man – on his head. The prize? His friends’ mobile phones.

In harrowing footage that has gone viral once again, the shirtless young man is seen standing outside a building as his mates stack the industrial bags one by one onto his head and shoulders. He manages to straighten up for a brief moment under the enormous burden before his body buckles.

His knees give way, he folds forward and collapses to the ground in a heap. The bags crash down around him. Onlookers can be heard laughing at first – until it becomes clear something is terribly wrong.

Friends rush forward, pouring water over him and desperately trying to pull him upright. But Gbenga cannot move. His spine and nervous system had been catastrophically damaged by the crushing weight. He was left completely paralysed.

Doctors fought to save him, but the young man died a few days later from his injuries.

The tragic incident, which took place in September 2025, has resurfaced online, prompting fresh waves of shock and anger. Viewers have slammed the friends for encouraging the deadly stunt and for their initial laughter as Gbenga lay stricken on the ground.

One social media user wrote: “Animals. They continued laughing… these people have no sense at all.” Others called for the group to face consequences, labelling the dare “suicide in disguise”.

Cement bags in Nigeria typically weigh 50kg each. Attempting to lift four at once is an extreme feat even for trained strongmen – and doing so unbalanced on the head is a recipe for disaster. Medical experts have warned that such loads can easily fracture the cervical vertebrae, compress the spinal cord and cause irreversible paralysis or death.

The video serves as a grim reminder of the deadly consequences of peer pressure and online-era dares. What began as a joke among mates ended with a grieving family and a life cut short – all for a handful of phones that were never worth the risk.
