A grandmother was crushed to death in a scene of pure terror after a lift suddenly plunged downwards with its doors still wide open – trapping her in a deadly gap just inches from safety while her daughter and young grandson watched in horror.
The nightmarish incident, captured on CCTV and described by many as straight out of a horror movie, unfolded on Sunday evening, 16 August 2026, at Sai Surya Enclave (also referred to as Surya Towers) in Ongole, Andhra Pradesh.
Vanitha, aged around 50, had stepped into the lift with her daughter and toddler grandson. The family appeared to be heading out, with luggage in tow, and the mood was light as the little boy – still unsteady on his feet – took his time exiting when the elevator reached their floor.
His mother followed safely. Then, in a split second of pure horror, the lift began to drop with the doors remaining open. Vanitha, mid-step, was caught between the moving cabin and the edge of the floor. The metal gate crashed down as she was trapped and crushed in the narrow gap.
Terrifying footage shows the daughter frantically screaming for help and desperately pressing the call buttons in a futile bid to reverse the deadly descent. Neighbours raced to the scene. One man pulled at her arms while others struggled to free her. Even the young child can be seen near the chaos as residents finally managed to drag the severely injured woman clear.
Vanitha was rushed to RIMS Hospital in Ongole, where she later died from her injuries. Some reports indicated she suffered a heart attack during treatment.
The viral CCTV has left viewers across India and beyond shaken. Families were going about an ordinary evening when mechanical failure turned a simple lift ride into a fatal trap. Questions are now being asked about the maintenance and safety systems of the elevator, with police looking into whether proper inspections had been carried out.
What should have been a routine exit became a real-life horror story, one that claimed a mother’s life in front of her own daughter and grandson, and left an entire apartment complex reeling.
