Horrifying videos have emerged showing a devastating flash flood tearing through northern Nepal, leaving a trail of destruction, claiming lives and shattering communities in its wake.
Dramatic footage circulating online captures the moment a roaring torrent of brown, debris-filled water surges through the mountainous Rasuwa district, slamming into buildings, sweeping away bridges and flooding streets as local people watch helplessly from higher ground.
At least eight people have been confirmed dead, with dozens more reported missing – including security personnel and customs staff – after the sudden deluge struck areas near the Tibet border on Wednesday morning.
The flood, which thundered down the Bhote Koshi River around 9 am local time, appears to have originated from the Chinese side of the border. Villages and market towns including Syapru Besi and Timure were among the worst hit, with reports of homes, vehicles, roads and infrastructure projects simply vanishing under the muddy onslaught.
In one particularly chilling clip, a metal bridge is battered by the force of the water while multi-storey buildings stand precariously on the edge of the raging river. Another shows the brown floodwaters spreading rapidly across what moments earlier had been a bustling riverside settlement, sending plumes of spray and dust into the air.
District officials have warned the true death toll could rise significantly as rescue teams struggle to reach the hardest-hit zones. Helicopters were scrambled, but high water levels initially prevented landings in some areas.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah ordered the full mobilisation of the Nepali Army, police and Armed Police Force for search and rescue operations. Several people have already been plucked to safety by air, though communication with some border outposts remains cut.
The sudden surge also battered hydropower installations, knocking out more than 12 per cent of Nepal’s national hydroelectric capacity and leaving hundreds of megawatts offline. Downstream districts including Nuwakot, Dhading and beyond were placed on high alert as the floodwaters continued their destructive path along the Trishuli River system.
Authorities suspect the disaster may have been triggered by a glacial lake outburst or ice avalanche high in the Tibetan mountains – a growing threat in the rapidly warming Himalayas. Little to no heavy rain was recorded locally in Rasuwa itself, heightening suspicions of a glacial cause.
Across the border, Chinese media reported “major casualties” and missing people in Gyirong county after a related mudslide struck the land crossing.
