Shocking night-time footage has captured a gang clinging to the back of a speeding refrigerated lorry on Egypt’s Cairo–Ismailia Desert Road and hauling boxes of frozen chicken out of the open doors, all while the driver carried on, completely unaware.
The clip, filmed by a passing motorist on 25 August and later shared widely online, shows a battered turquoise pickup tucked tight against the rear of a white freezer truck branded with food advertising. As both vehicles barrel along the dual carriageway after dark, men scramble between the two, yank the rear doors open and start tossing crates into the pickup bed. Other gang members ride in the back of the truck, clinging on as the desert highway rushes past.
Egyptian reports say the haul was seven crates of frozen poultry, about 140kg in total, though some accounts put it at 105kg. The lorry, belonging to a refrigerated transport firm, was heading to deliver the shipment to a company in 10th of Ramadan City when the raid took place in the Al-Shorouk police district on the outskirts of Cairo.
The driver noticed nothing. The company only realised it had been robbed after the video exploded across social media. Police said they had received no report of the theft until the footage went viral.
Investigators identified a six-man gang with previous convictions for armed robbery, attempted murder, drug trafficking, illegal weapons, and causing permanent injury. Officers tracked them to hideouts in Cairo and Qalyubia. When security forces, including Central Security, moved in, the suspects opened fire. Three were killed and the remaining three arrested.
Police recovered the green pickup used in the heist, two automatic rifles, a shotgun, a sawn-off firearm, some of the stolen poultry and other loot from separate robberies still being catalogued. The three survivors have been referred to prosecutors on charges including armed robbery, illegal weapons possession and shooting at security forces.
Online, viewers compared the stunt to a low-budget Fast & Furious sequence, minus the Hollywood polish, plus a very real body count. One commenter on the viral post quipped that “Dominic Toretto is back.” The punchline did not last long. Within two days, the men who treated a desert highway like a movie set were dead or in custody.
