A 41-year-old Milwaukee father rushed onto a youth football field in Wisconsin and tripped a 9-year-old player who was sprinting toward the end zone, according to police and cellphone video that has since gone viral.
The incident happened Saturday, Aug. 22, during a Brew City League 10-and-under game between the Case Eagles and the Milwaukee Colts at Case High School in Mount Pleasant. Video captured by a parent shows the Eagles ball carrier, wearing No. 88, turning the edge with a clear path to the pylon. A man in a black T-shirt and yellow cap then leaves the visiting sideline, steps onto the grass, and extends his left leg. Both the boy and the adult go down. Officials stop the play. The child gets back up. Police say he was not injured.
Mount Pleasant police said the man was a parent of a Colts player who “became upset over a play.” After the clip circulated and another parent followed his vehicle, officers stopped him minutes later on Highway 20. Body-camera video released by local outlets shows him telling an officer he went onto the field because “there were just some bigger kids than my kid and I got impulsive.” He admitted what he did, said he had already apologized, and was issued a citation for disorderly conduct. He was released.
Police later reviewed the case for possible child abuse under Wisconsin law. They said the elements were not met because there was no bodily harm. The Racine County District Attorney’s Office agreed the disorderly conduct citation was the appropriate charge. League officials banned the parent from future games and fined the Colts. The two teams are scheduled to play again in two weeks.
Eagles head coach Channing Schultz was out of town at a family wedding when it happened. Parents flooded his phone with the video. “I was filled with anger, it was disgusting,” he told local stations. “It was the most cowardly act I’ve ever seen. For him to just do it with so much intent and he was committed. No words can fix that at all.” Schultz said the boy could have broken a leg or shin. He has called for a lifetime ban and more accountability so his players are not put in that position again.
Witnesses described the same scene. “There was a parent on the other side of the field that just kind of he looked like he ran full force and just stuck his leg out,” one parent, Claire Bernal, told WISN. Another parent who recorded the play said the Eagles were already up big when the adult entered the field and parents demanded he be ejected.
Youth sports sidelines have long been a flashpoint for adults who cannot keep their composure. This clip is different because it is not a shove in the parking lot or a screaming match with a referee. It is a grown man leaving the spectator area, walking into a live play, and taking out a fourth-grader who was trying to score. The boy walked away. The video did not.
