Shocking footage has captured the moment a veteran Iranian political figure collapsed and died of a sudden heart attack while addressing a packed night-time gathering in the country’s north-west.

Nemat Elhami, a well-known local activist and former parliamentary candidate, was speaking at Bey’at Square in Bileh Savar, Ardabil province, when he suddenly stopped, slumped at the podium and fell. Onlookers rushed forward as the camera jerked and the crowd reacted in alarm.

Iranian outlets including Mehr News and Shargh Daily said he suffered cardiac arrest on Saturday night and could not be revived. He had been standing before a backdrop of revolutionary banners and official portraits, a familiar setting for regime-aligned public events in the Moghan region.

Elhami ran in the 2024 parliamentary election for the Parsabad–Bileh Savar–Aslanduz constituency. Local media described him as a prominent figure in the area and a political activist. Some overseas accounts later labelled him a hardliner with past IRGC connections and an Iran-Iraq War veteran, though official Iranian reports stuck to the simpler description of a former candidate who died of heart failure.

The clip, only about 20 seconds long, spread rapidly. It shows Elhami still speaking when his body gives way. There is no visible struggle with security or medical staff before the collapse; the moment is abrupt.

Bileh Savar sits near Iran’s border with Azerbaijan. Night rallies of this kind are a regular feature of official political life in smaller cities, mixing local campaigning with loyalty displays. Elhami’s death turned one of those routine events into a grim public spectacle.
