An 18-year-old girl had her long hair sheared off and her head shaved completely bald by a furious bar manager after she ran up a 60,000-baht (£1,400 / $1,800) bill at a Bangkok host club – and then tried to walk out without paying.
The extraordinary confrontation, captured on camera and now circulating widely online, has sparked outrage, police complaints and a public apology from the venue after the manager admitted he “lost his temper.”
The teenager, identified in Thai reports only by the nickname Muay, allegedly used a doctored ID card showing her as 20 so she could enter the host bar in Bangkok’s Pinklao district on 25 August. Once inside, she spent hours ordering more than 200 drinks for male entertainers she had been following on TikTok.
When the bill arrived, she had no money. Staff stopped her from leaving. According to the bar, unpaid tabs of this kind are routinely deducted from employees’ wages – leaving the manager facing a personal financial hit as well as a huge loss for the business.
What happened next is at the heart of the row. The girl signed a short written agreement to “sell” her hair for 3,000 baht (about £70). She later said she thought this meant a trim.
Instead, the manager produced electric clippers and, on camera, shaved her head to the scalp.
In the footage, he can be heard insisting he is “not taking advantage” of her. After the shave, he took her to a police station and reported her for failing to pay.
Three days later, the girl and her 34-year-old mother walked into Bang Yi Khan police station themselves and filed a complaint. They allege she was pressured, that staff grabbed her arm, and that she never consented to being left completely bald. The mother says she offered to pay the bill in instalments but was refused.
The bar has since contacted a prominent Thai welfare activist, Chalida Phalamat of the Pen Nueng Foundation, to apologise. Officials at the venue conceded the manager acted “out of anger and impulsiveness” and said they would try to reach the family about compensation.
Ms Phalamat, who first publicised the clip, said she understood the bar’s losses but called the head-shaving “excessive and unlawful.” A contract signed under pressure, she argued, is worthless, and forcibly shaving someone’s head can amount to assault.
The girl has admitted using a fake ID and visiting other host bars in a short period, leaving at least one other venue with an unpaid bill. That detail has divided opinion online: some viewers say the punishment, while extreme, will stop a repeat offender; others say no unpaid drinks tab justifies taking clippers to an 18-year-old’s head in front of a camera.
Thai police are investigating both the original non-payment and the girl’s complaint about how she was treated. The bar has not been named in most English-language reports.
Whatever the legal outcome, the clip has already done its damage. One side sees a serial dine-and-dasher taught a brutal lesson. The other sees a teenager left bald after a night that spiralled far beyond any reasonable way of settling a bill.
