A 90-year-old woman was walking along Brighton Beach Avenue on Monday morning when a stranger burst out of the subway, grabbed a baby crib stuffed with trash from a garbage bin and hurled it at her, knocking the elderly victim to the sidewalk in a shocking unprovoked attack captured on surveillance video.
The disturbing footage, obtained by News 12, shows the man rushing from the Brighton Beach station around 9:45 a.m. at 501 Brighton Beach Ave. He immediately snatched the piece of furniture and launched it at the woman, who crumpled to the ground as trash spilled across the pavement.
Bystanders rushed over to help the fallen senior as the attacker bolted from the scene. EMS transported the victim to Coney Island Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
Police described the assault as random. The 90-year-old was simply out for a walk when the unidentified man approached and struck her with the crib, causing her to fall. No words were exchanged before the attack, according to authorities.
The incident has rattled Brighton Beach, a neighborhood with one of the city’s highest concentrations of older residents. Similar attacks on seniors have left locals on edge.
NYPD investigators are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect or has information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. Anonymous tips that lead to an arrest and indictment can earn a cash reward of up to $3,500. No arrest had been announced as of Tuesday evening.
