Journey dropped a Steve Perry lookalike onstage in Japan, and the resemblance is so freaky some fans swore the original frontman had secretly flown in.
The clip making the rounds shows Hugo Valenti, longtime New Jersey tribute singer, former Voyage frontman, now head of Hugo – The Ultimate Journey Tribute, belting with Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, and the rest of the band. Plaid shirt, long hair, jeans, that same lean frame. He even moves like Perry. One reply to the video just said “That’s Steve Perry.” Hard to blame them.
Valenti has been doing this for two decades. He didn’t stumble into the comparison. When Journey was looking for a Perry replacement in the late ’90s, the band’s people told him he looked too much like the guy.
Neal Schon later said seeing Valenti on tape was “really weird” because the resemblance was that exact. They went with Steve Augeri instead. Valenti started a tribute band. The joke writes itself: the guy they passed on for being too Perry now keeps getting invited onto the real stage.
Voice-wise, it’s not close. It’s a carbon copy. Same bright tenor, same control on the high notes, same way he leans into the ballads without turning them into karaoke. In Tokyo, he did “Faithfully” and the Escape deep cut “Keep on Runnin’.” Second time around, he nailed it. First night in Fukuoka was a little shaky. Second night the crowd went off. That’s the difference between a tribute guy and a guy who has spent his entire adult life living inside those songs.
The timing is not subtle. Journey is on the Final Frontier farewell run. Arnel Pineda has been the singer since 2007, but other members have been splitting vocal duties. Cain is leaving after this tour. The future of the name is up in the air. So of course, a video of Valenti fronting the actual band immediately produced the question: Will he be Journey’s next singer?
Nobody from the band has said that. Valenti still has tribute dates in Hoboken and Patchogue this month. But the optics are radioactive. A guy they once rejected for looking too much like Steve Perry just stood next to Schon and Cain and sounded like 1981. Fans who have spent years missing Perry are not being quiet about it.
Perry himself is not coming back. Everyone knows that. What Journey just did is the next-best, slightly unhinged version: they wheeled out the closest living replica and let him sing the hits. For two minutes it worked. The voice, the hair, the stance, it was all there.
Don’t stop believin’. Just maybe don’t look too hard at the guy holding the mic.
