A Missouri foster mother who sent a teenage girl to a stranger in Texas, and later welcomed a monkey into her already crowded menagerie, just walked out of court a free woman.
Brenda Deutsch, 70, of Winfield, pleaded guilty earlier this year to first-degree child endangerment. Last week, Lincoln County Judge Thomas Frawley handed her seven years in prison, then immediately suspended every last day of it. She got three years of probation instead. No jail. No prison. Home in time for dinner with the primates.
Deutsch hid her face behind a piece of paper as she left the courthouse. The victim, now 17, was in the room watching.
Prosecutors say Deutsch fostered more than 200 children over two decades. They also say the state fielded roughly 200 hotline complaints about abuse and neglect in her home — and that many of those calls never made it to law enforcement.
The teen told investigators Deutsch beat her with a paddle, wooden trim, shoes and an open hand. One blow to the face made her bleed. Clothes were taken and dumped at Goodwill as punishment. Food was scarce. The girl said the abuse stretched from 2022 into early 2025.
Then came the part that sounded like a fever dream.
Frustrated that they “weren’t getting along,” Deutsch asked a Texas acquaintance who also collected exotic animals to take the girl. Witnesses later described a monkey coming back to Missouri after the child went south. Prosecutor Mike Wood has said investigators could not prove a clean “kid-for-primate” swap that would support a trafficking charge — but he also said the monkey did arrive. Deutsch already kept at least seven of them. Her own daughter later joked that the monkeys got better housing than the kids.
The girl was passed around, left alone for days in filthy conditions with exotic animals, and only pulled out after a school resource officer in Missouri noticed she had vanished from class and Texas CPS stepped in. Deutsch, according to prosecutors, did not want her back.
Frawley called Deutsch “reprehensible.” He also ripped Missouri’s foster system for letting her keep a license for so long, then revoked it from the bench and apologized to the victims sitting in court. “The system failed them,” he said, in so many words.
Deutsch’s supporters painted her as a missionary and a woman who had “helped needy children.” Her biological daughter, Brina Johnson, sat on the other side of the aisle and called the outcome a gut punch. She said she turned over recorded conversations and a photo of her mother with the monkey. “She wasn’t any nicer to those monkeys than she was to a child,” Johnson told FOX 2.
Two abuse-or-neglect counts were dropped in the plea. A separate case alleging Deutsch submitted bogus respite-care invoices for reimbursement is still hanging over her. The endangerment conviction itself carried up to seven years. The judge gave her the number, and then took it away.
That’s the ledger: a teen shipped across state lines, a house full of ignored hotline calls, a courtroom apology from the bench and a 70-year-old woman driving home on probation.
In Missouri this week, a child was worth three years of “stay out of trouble.” The monkey, by all accounts, already had a nicer room.
