A young woman motorcyclist was hurled onto the tarmac and her £10,000 sports bike dragged along the road after a group of men in a white sedan allegedly chased her for asking them to keep their distance – then smashed into her from the side before fleeing the scene.
The terrifying incident, captured in crystal-clear footage from cameras mounted on her motorcycle and those of her riding companions, has sparked fury across India after it went viral on Sunday.
Sia, who posts under the Instagram handle @rebelwheels_sia_, was enjoying a Sunday morning ride with her biking group along Gurugram’s busy Golf Course Road when the nightmare began.
Wearing a brown long-sleeved top, black gloves and a full-face helmet with a distinctive orange visor, the rider was astride her purple Aprilia RS 457 superbike when a white Maruti Ciaz bearing Haryana plate HR 30Y 4949 began tailing the group.m.economictimes.com
According to Sia, the occupants – who she claims appeared drunk and aggressive – kept closing in on her, making hand gestures and signalling for her to pull over.“He had started chasing on the Golf Course Road. I asked him to drive while maintaining distance. He kept making hand gestures asking me to stop my bike,” she said in the video she later posted.
A fellow rider tried to position his bike behind hers to shield her from the approaching car. Sia accelerated in an attempt to stay ahead and prevent the sedan from cutting her off.
Then the driver allegedly swerved sharply across lanes and rammed her motorcycle from the side.
The impact threw Sia off the bike. Her Aprilia skidded across the asphalt for several metres, throwing up a trail of sparks, while she tumbled onto the road.
The car then sped off without stopping.
One of her friends immediately gave chase and caught up with the sedan at a nearby traffic light. Footage from that moment shows an angry man in the driver’s seat – later identified by some reports as Kalyan Bainsla, gesturing aggressively, including raising his middle finger, as a gloved hand from the pursuing biker reaches toward the car door.
The driver then accelerated away as the lights changed.
Sia, who was wearing full protective riding gear that fellow bikers credit with preventing far worse injuries, was taken to hospital. She later said she felt “unsafe on Gurugram roads.”“People like these aren’t afraid of hitting people and running away,” she wrote.
The registered owner of the car, a man named Manish who works in the Army, has distanced himself from the incident. He told reporters a friend called Kalyan Singh (also reported as Kalyan Bainsla) from Palwal district had borrowed the vehicle two days earlier.
“I was at work. I found out about the accident this morning. I called him but he didn’t pick up,” Manish said.
Bainsla, who, according to social media posts, claims to be an international kabaddi player and rugby team member, has since deactivated his Instagram account.
Gurugram Police’s Social Media Monitoring Cell spotted the video circulating online and took suo motu action. An FIR has been registered at Sector 56 police station. Officers say they have contacted Sia and three teams are searching for the accused.
Sia has said she will file a formal complaint with her lawyer but has asked the public not to try to identify her further and has declined media interviews.
The clip has ignited a fierce debate about road safety and the particular risks faced by women riders in India, many of whom cover their faces and identities precisely to avoid the kind of unwanted attention that appears to have preceded this crash.
As one fellow female rider put it after the video spread: women just want to ride with pride – not hide.
