PEARLAND, Texas — Dashcam video captured a striking scene Wednesday as thousands of dollars in cash flew out the window of a pickup truck during a police chase south of Houston.
Pearland police say it started with a call about a masked man at an ATM drive-thru on Broadway Street. Officers were told the suspect was using multiple credit cards and pulling out large amounts of cash. He then climbed into the passenger seat of a white GMC Sierra and left the area.
A department drone helped locate the truck in a nearby business parking lot. When an officer approached, the passenger got out and was detained. The driver took off.
Officers tried to stop the Sierra. The driver refused. During the pursuit, cash began pouring out the window onto the street, stacks of bills scattering across the pavement as police followed.
The truck eventually stopped on Max Road. Officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop and took the driver into custody without further incident.
Police recovered more than $6,000 from the roadway.
The passenger was identified as Tarvares Givens of Florida. He was charged with failure to identify. The driver, Levon Steven Jr., also of Florida, was charged with evading arrest and tampering with evidence.
Detectives say the investigation is ongoing and they are looking at additional fraud-related charges.
The video, released by Pearland police, shows the patrol car closing in on the white truck along a tree-lined suburban road as loose cash blows across the pavement behind it. Officers later collected the bills that had been dumped during the chase.
Authorities have not released further details on the cards used at the ATM or how much money was withdrawn before the suspects fled.
