Is a Thousand-Dollar Steak Worth It When They Treat It Like a Religious Relic and Make the Waiters Dance Like They’re at a Bar Mitzvah?

Look, Las Vegas exists so people can light money on fire and call it a good time. That’s the deal. You know it, I know it, the guy next to you dropping $400 on a bottle of Grey Goose that costs $28 at Costco knows it. But every once in a while something pops up that makes even the most Vegas-pilled degenerate stop and go, “Wait a minute.”That’s the $1,000 Beef Case at Papi Steak inside Fontainebleau.

The video that’s been making the rounds shows exactly what you get for your grand. A crew of waiters in vests and white gloves comes charging through the dining room like they just won the lottery. Lights flashing, hands in the air, everybody cheering like the steak personally saved their marriage. They drop this glowing gold briefcase on the table, pop it open, and a cloud of smoke billows out like they’re announcing the new pope. Inside sits a 55-ounce MS9+ Australian Wagyu tomahawk the size of a small child, sitting on ice like it’s too important to touch the tablecloth. Then they brand it tableside and whisk it away to the kitchen.

This is not a quiet steak dinner. This is bottle service with extra steps and a cow.

The whole thing is the brainchild of David “Papi” Einhorn, who got gifted a diamond-encrusted briefcase one day and then had a butcher show up with a cut of Australian Wagyu so expensive he didn’t know how to sell it. His solution? Put the steak in the briefcase, dim the lights, and make the staff act like they just found the Ark of the Covenant. He has said straight up that he has to charge a thousand bucks or he loses money on the meat, and the show is how you get people to swallow the price. Fair enough. This is Vegas. Spectacle is the product.

And look, the steak itself is not the problem. Multiple people who’ve actually eaten it say the thing is legitimately excellent, buttery, heavily marbled, cooked right, feeds six people if you’re not animals about it. Business Insider called it one of the better meals they’ve had in the city. The rest of the menu at Papi Steak isn’t slop either. It’s a nightclub that happens to serve very good food, DJ and all. That’s the vibe they sold.

The question is whether any steak on earth is worth a thousand dollars when half the experience is watching grown men in bow ties do the wave because you ordered dinner.

You can get a phenomenal steak in this town for a third of the price, and nobody makes you clap for it. You can also blow a thousand dollars on a lot of other dumb things in Vegas that at least have the decency to be obviously stupid, blackjack, bottle service, a hooker who pretends to laugh at your jokes. A steak that arrives like it’s being sworn in as mayor sits in a weird middle ground. It’s trying to be both serious food and a nightclub stunt at the same time, and the stunt is so extra it starts to undercut the food.

So is it worth it? If you’re the kind of person who wants the entire restaurant to look at your table and you have more money than sense, sure. You’ll get a great piece of meat and a story. If you just want a steak, you’re paying a few hundred extra dollars for the privilege of watching waiters act like they just discovered electricity.

Vegas is supposed to be ridiculous. This one might have crossed the line from ridiculous into actually embarrassing. You tell me. Would you sit through the clown show for the steak, or would you just order the regular tomahawk and keep your dignity?
