A mama black bear in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, treated a parked car like her personal drive-thru Friday, standing on her hind legs, popping the door open, and letting her cubs climb inside to raid whatever snacks they could find.
Video captured by Kathie Gentry and shared by ABC News shows the adult bear working the handle of a teal sedan in a parking lot near condos and rental buildings. Once the door swung open, the cubs piled in one after another. The family rummaged around, grabbed items including what appears to be a bag of chips, then walked off and discarded some of the loot in the lot. Honking from a nearby vehicle did little to hurry them along.
This is not a one-off stunt. Gatlinburg sits at the edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, home to one of the densest black bear populations in the East and more than 13 million visitors a year. Bears here have learned that unlocked cars and leftover food equal an easy meal. Wildlife officials have been warning for years: lock the doors, empty the vehicle of food and scented items, and do not give these animals a reason to keep coming back.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency says the problem has gotten worse. As of late September, 60 bears had already been humanely killed in Sevier County this year because of conflicts with people, breaking into cars, entering structures, and showing up in places they should not. Officials call that behavior “not normal” and a public safety risk. Dense bears plus heavy tourism plus sloppy food storage is a recipe that keeps repeating.
Locals and frequent visitors know the drill. The city has spent millions on bear-resistant dumpsters. Rental properties hand out BearWise magnets. Still, viral videos keep popping up of bears treating cars like refrigerators. One commenter on the footage put it simply: lock your doors. Another noted the bears were hungry and someone had left food inside.
The clip is entertaining until you remember what happens when the same boldness turns dangerous. These animals are smart, strong, and increasingly comfortable around people. A mama bear teaching her cubs that a car door is just another handle is cute on camera. It is also a warning that common sense still matters in bear country.
