An 18-year-old student at Benjamin Franklin High School in Highland Park died Wednesday after falling from a fourth-floor outdoor railing, an incident that followed a physical altercation inside a classroom during the school day.
Los Angeles Fire Department personnel responded to the campus in the 800 block of North Avenue 54 shortly before 1 p.m. on Sept. 30 and transported the male juvenile to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The school was placed on lockdown for nearly three hours while officers and school police investigated. LAPD described the response as a death investigation and stated there was no initial evidence of foul play.
Video obtained by local outlets shows two male students fighting inside a classroom while a teacher repeatedly called for them to stop. One student, wearing a backpack, is seen striking the other, who had reddish hair, knocking him down. After the fight subsided and a final punch was thrown, the student who had been struck left the classroom.
Additional footage shows him moving along the fourth-floor corridor before going over the railing. Witnesses told reporters they heard a loud impact in the courtyard below. One parent who spoke with ABC7 said she immediately contacted her own children after learning a student had fallen from the fourth floor.
Police have identified and interviewed the other student involved in the classroom fight. Preliminary findings indicated the student who fell was not being actively chased or threatened at the moment he went over the railing, according to statements reported by FOX 11. Classmates described the deceased student as quiet and not heavily involved in classroom interactions. Authorities have not released his name, citing his age and the ongoing investigation. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner is participating in the review.
Los Angeles Unified School District officials said additional mental health staff would be on campus the following day to support students and staff. Principal Marine Davtyan notified families of a medical emergency that required the lockdown and emphasized privacy rules limited further public details. Students remained on campus until roughly 4 p.m. while the scene was processed.
The incident has drawn attention to school safety protocols and the handling of physical fights during instructional time. Witness accounts and circulating video have been cited by local news organizations as the basis for describing the sequence that preceded the fall. No charges had been announced as of Thursday.
