Shocking interior video of a deadly Winter Haven school bus crash shows the terrifying instant a packed bus of high school students was violently slammed and flipped after a car crossed the center line, killing a 16-year-old girl headed to her first cheer practice and a young man driving to work.

The grainy onboard camera, released by Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, captures the bus rolling east on Lucerne Park Road just after 6 a.m. Monday with the driver at the wheel and teens in their seats. In a blink, the view erupts into chaos as the bus is struck from behind by a white Chevy Malibu that veered across the double yellow lines.

Students are hurled from their seats. Bags and bodies slam into the ceiling and windows as the bus swerves hard into oncoming traffic. The camera spins wildly during the head-on collision with a silver Jeep before the bus rolls into a ditch, ending with an upside-down view of seats, backpacks, and stunned passengers amid the wreckage.

The Malibu, driven by 23-year-old nursing student Maria Mondragon Jimenez of Haines City, clipped the bus’s rear tandem wheel and tore off a tire, investigators said. The impact sent the bus — carrying 37 Winter Haven High School students, the driver, and the driver’s 9-year-old daughter, careening into the westbound lane.

It slammed head-on into the Jeep driven by 26-year-old Deshawn Smith of Haines City, who was killed instantly. His vehicle caught fire. The entire sequence unfolded in roughly four seconds.

“You can tell that she’s in her lane of travel, she is not speeding, she is under the speed limit, and that’s how horrible and how quick it really is,” Judd said of the bus driver while showing the footage. “It happened in the blink of an eye.”

One student died at the scene: 16-year-old Adinaluz Guadalupe Prieto Oyola, a 10th-grader who was supposed to attend her first cheerleading practice that afternoon. Superintendent Frederick Heid called, notifying her family of the hardest conversation of his career, describing her as “an amazing young lady” loved by teachers and friends. Her older brother had graduated from the same school the year before.

Smith, the Jeep driver, had no chance to avoid the bus that suddenly crossed into his path, Judd said. Thirty-five people were rushed to area hospitals, including AdventHealth Heart of Florida, Lakeland Regional, Winter Haven Hospital, and Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital. Three remained hospitalized but were expected to recover.

The bus driver was pinned behind the wheel after the rollover but managed to free herself despite her own injuries. She immediately began helping students, all while her young daughter was also aboard. Judd praised her actions as the investigation continues, with the National Transportation Safety Board assisting.

Authorities have not yet determined why Jimenez’s Malibu crossed the center line. No criminal charges are expected at this stage, though she may face a citation. The crash site sits about 1.5 miles off Highway 27 near a Walmart distribution center in Winter Haven.
