Is THIS an alien mothership? Bizarre footage of a vast craft ‘hovering’ over the countryside, with figures apparently walking on top, leaves viewers stunned… but the explanation is far more ordinary

A jaw-dropping clip of what appears to be a huge, flat craft hanging in a bright blue sky, complete with dark figures strolling along its sunlit edge, has left viewers asking whether they are watching the opening scene of a real-life close encounter.

The 25-second video shows a dark, table-like mass suspended above a green treeline and low hills. A brilliant white glare runs along its upper rim. Several upright silhouettes stand and shift along that glowing edge, as if people or something else were pacing the deck of an object the size of a building.

The camera is shaky and filmed in portrait. It drifts, then pushes in on the bright band. The shapes come and go against the glare. Below them, ordinary summer clouds and a line of trees sit in the frame, giving the whole scene an eerie, oversized scale.

Shelf clouds, the long flat storm clouds that can look uncannily like flying saucers, have fooled sky-watchers for decades. Rare optical tricks have done the same. This clip has the classic ingredients: an unexplained shape, a hard white light, and humanoid figures that seem to move with purpose.

Some who have seen the footage are convinced the silhouettes are walking. Others have joked that the scene belongs in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the 1977 film whose five-note musical theme has become shorthand for a mothership descending over ordinary countryside.

Then the closer looks began.

The dark figures do not behave like cloud texture. They stand upright, spaced apart, and shift in a way that matches people moving on a solid surface. A person walking on a cloud at that apparent height would have to be hundreds of feet tall. Nothing in the frame supports that.

The more persuasive reading is also the more mundane one. The camera appears to be pointed through glass, a window, a screen, a reflective pane, and what registers as a craft is a reflection of workers on a nearby roof or construction site, laid over the real sky behind the glass.

The bright band matches sunlight hitting metal, roofing material or the glass itself. The silhouettes match people in work clothes moving along a roofline. The “craft” does not change shape with the wind. The background clouds stay oddly stable while the supposed object seems to float.

Meteorologists have long warned that shelf clouds, lenticular clouds and simple reflections can manufacture mothership-shaped illusions. The moment the surrounding context returns, the edge of a window, a building, a hard hat, the craft usually collapses.

For now, the balance of the evidence points to roofers and a pane of glass, not a visitor from another world. The five-note song remains entirely in the imagination of the people watching.

The clip is still circulating. And somewhere, presumably, a construction crew is still walking across a roof, unaware they have been promoted to the bridge of an alien ship.
