The youngster may have fumbled a simple spelling challenge, but what he lacked in spelling skills, he more than made up for in courage when the gloves got put on.

It sounded like the easiest $100 a kid could ever make. All he had to do was spell a name correctly. No maths, no complicated trivia, no need to know the capital of a country he'd never visited. Just a few letters.

There was, however, one rather substantial catch.

A big, imposing man put the challenge to a scrawny youngster: spell his name correctly and walk away with $100. Get it wrong, and he'd have to step into the boxing ring and face the bigger man for 30 seconds.

It was hardly the sort of deal a financial adviser would recommend.
The youngster, identified in the challenge as Klaus, was given his moment to shine. Unfortunately, his spelling skills apparently weren't quite ready for prime time. He got the name wrong, meaning the $100 was suddenly looking a lot less likely.

But rather than making excuses, backing away or suddenly remembering an urgent appointment elsewhere, the kid did something that deserves a little respect.
He accepted the challenge.

From spelling bee to boxing match

With the deal settled, the pair moved on to the physical part of the bargain. The size difference was hard to ignore: one man looked like he'd been built in a gym, while the youngster looked considerably less intimidating standing beside him.
The gloves came out, and what began as a cheeky little test of spelling quickly turned into a test of nerve.

Thirty seconds might not sound like much time. But when you're facing somebody considerably bigger than you, half a minute can feel like an eternity. Suddenly, those missing letters don't seem like such a big problem after all.

The youngster nevertheless appeared willing to take his chances. He'd failed the spelling test, but he wasn't about to fail the courage test without at least giving it a go.

And that's what makes the clip entertaining. The kid knew the deal, understood the consequences and still stepped forward instead of trying to wriggle out of it.

Of course, there is a difference between being brave and being sensible. Taking on a much bigger opponent for the sake of a hundred dollars isn't exactly a masterclass in financial planning, particularly when the prize money is no longer guaranteed.
But you've got to admire the commitment.

The internet's favourite kind of underdog?

There's something instantly appealing about an underdog who refuses to back down. The youngster might not have mastered the spelling of the name, but he showed that he wasn't going to let an embarrassing answer dictate what happened next.
The bigger man, meanwhile, had set the terms of the challenge and the youngster was prepared to play by them.

Whether the kid had any realistic chance of matching his opponent physically was another matter entirely. The point was that he was prepared to stand there and find out.

And let's be honest: if spelling someone's name incorrectly is all it takes to end up boxing them, perhaps the rest of us should start carrying dictionaries everywhere we go.

Still, there is a lesson here for anyone tempted by easy money: always make sure you understand the fine print before accepting the cash.

Especially when the fine print comes with boxing gloves.
The youngster may have lost the spelling round, but he earned plenty of credit for stepping up to the challenge. Sometimes, the most impressive thing you can do is simply refuse to bottle it when the pressure is on.

And if he ever gets another shot at that $100, somebody might want to give him a spelling lesson first.
