Shocking video has captured the terrifying moment two men were dragged into the turbulent Black Sea by powerful storm waves near Tuapse in Russia’s Krasnodar region, after witnesses said they were drunk and ignored clear warnings about the dangerous conditions.
The dramatic footage, filmed from the shore as holidaymakers looked on, shows the pair on a beach with steep cliffs and hills in the background amid crashing surf. Large waves repeatedly slam into the shoreline, knocking the men off their feet before the powerful currents and undertow pull them further out into the open water. One man appears to be in darker clothing while the other is more lightly dressed or shirtless; both are quickly overwhelmed as the sea turns from a hazardous surf zone into a deadly trap.
According to local reports, the men entered the water despite the sea being in a stormy state. Eyewitnesses said they were intoxicated and chose to “play with the sea” anyway. Officials confirmed they were in a drunken condition when the waves hit them.
Evgeny Shevchenko, head of the emergency management department for the Tuapse municipal district, described the incident bluntly: “The drunk ones decided to play with the sea. The wave dragged them away.” He added that rescuers searched until late in the evening and spotted the men’s bodies roughly 80 metres from the shore, but conditions made it impossible to retrieve them. By morning the bodies were no longer visible, and boats could not launch because of the continuing rough weather.
Emergency services from Kuban-SPAS were involved in the response, with active searches expected to resume once the sea calms. As of the latest updates, the men remain missing and their fate is unclear.
The Black Sea coast around Tuapse and the broader Krasnodar region is a popular tourist destination, but it is no stranger to dangerous autumn storms. Meteorologists had issued storm warnings for parts of the area in the days leading up to the incident, forecasting strong winds and waves of several metres in height in nearby resorts such as Sochi, Anapa and Temryuk. Authorities had advised people to stay off beaches, piers and river mouths.
The video, which has circulated widely on social media, has prompted reactions ranging from shock at the power of the sea to criticism of the men’s decision to enter the water. One shared caption summed it up simply: “The sea shows no mercy to reckless behaviour.”
While the full identities of the men have not been publicly confirmed in initial reports, the incident serves as another stark reminder of the risks of underestimating the Black Sea in stormy conditions, particularly when alcohol is involved. Search efforts continue as weather permits.
