MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — It was the kind of close encounter that belongs in a horror movie, not a sunny Florida afternoon.

A chilling video posted online in July 2023 captured a large shark swimming casually through shallow water packed with beachgoers at Miami Beach, its dorsal fin cutting the surface mere feet from swimmers who had no idea a predator was sharing their waves.

The shaky, handheld footage begins on the sand under a heavy, overcast sky. A woman in a colorful bikini stands near the water’s edge, arm outstretched as she points toward the ocean. Two men nearby also gesture and film with their phones while seagulls circle overhead. Within seconds, the camera pans out to the surf, where dozens of people are wading and swimming in waist- to chest-deep water.

That’s when the fin appears.

A dark, triangular dorsal fin slices through the greenish waves, moving steadily among the swimmers. In one moment, it rises clearly above the surface not far from a cluster of people. Beachgoers point and hold up phones. Some remain in the water. Others slowly make their way toward shore as the fin continues its path parallel to the beach. Later frames show more people standing in the surf, still filming, as the shark moves through the crowded shallows. The entire clip runs roughly 37 seconds.

The original poster described the animal as what “appears to be a Bull shark.” Replies pushed back, with some identifying the fin shape and behavior as consistent with a hammerhead. Florida waters see both species in the summer months, when sharks follow baitfish close to shore.

Bull sharks are especially notorious for tolerating shallow, even brackish water and are responsible for a disproportionate number of attacks in the state. Hammerheads, while less frequently implicated in bites, can grow massive and are regularly spotted near Florida beaches during warmer months. Either way, the video shows a sizable predator operating in water where people are standing and swimming.

Florida consistently ranks as the shark-attack capital of the world according to the International Shark Attack File, with the majority of incidents occurring in shallow water. Most are not fatal, and many sharks near shore are simply hunting fish. Still, experts repeatedly warn that sharing the water with large sharks carries risk — especially when the animals are close enough for their fins to break the surface among crowds.

In the video, the beachgoers’ reactions range from pointed fingers and raised phones to relative calm. No one appears to be screaming and sprinting from the water in panic, though the fin’s proximity is unmistakable. The clip quickly racked up hundreds of likes, reposts, and views after it was posted, with viewers calling it “straight out of Jaws.”

Ocean Rescue officials and marine biologists often note that sharks regularly patrol Florida’s beaches without incident. The vast majority of encounters end with the animal simply swimming away. This particular video, however, offers a stark reminder of how close those encounters can get, and how little warning swimmers sometimes receive.

As of the time the footage circulated, there were no reports of an attack connected to this specific sighting. The shark ultimately continued on its way, leaving a beach full of people holding phones and a social media feed full of people holding their breath.
