A peaceful Saturday afternoon in one of Poland's most popular tourist destinations descended into absolute horror after a gunman allegedly opened fire on random people in the heart of Kraków, killing at least five and leaving more than a dozen others injured before police shot and wounded the suspect.

The shocking attack unfolded at approximately 3 p.m. in Kraków's iconic Main Square, one of the busiest public spaces in the country and a major gathering point for tourists, shoppers and locals.

According to police, the suspect drove his vehicle directly onto the square before launching a seemingly indiscriminate shooting spree, firing at people in the surrounding area.

Witnesses and visitors were caught in the middle of the terrifying incident as gunfire erupted in a location normally packed with pedestrians enjoying the city's historic architecture, restaurants and outdoor cafes.

The scale of the carnage quickly became apparent as emergency services rushed to the scene. At least five people were confirmed dead, while more than a dozen others suffered injuries in the attack.

Police eventually confronted the suspected gunman and shot him, leaving him wounded before taking him into custody. Several police officers were also reported injured during the operation.

The response was enormous, with police units, paramedics and an air ambulance dispatched to the square. Authorities moved to secure the surrounding streets, while residents and visitors were urged to stay away as emergency crews worked to assist victims and investigators began piecing together what had happened.

The shooting sent shockwaves through Poland, with the country's highest political offices quickly responding to the unfolding tragedy.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he was receiving regular updates from Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński, confirming that police were investigating the circumstances and background of the attack.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki also expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, saying he expected a full explanation of the circumstances surrounding the bloodshed.

The president confirmed that he was in contact with the relevant authorities and that the head of Poland's National Security Bureau was traveling to Kraków.

"The safety of Poles is an absolute priority," Nawrocki said.

The United States also condemned the attack, with U.S. Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose describing the incident as a savage and murderous assault that shattered the peace of the historic city.

"America stands with Poland at this dark hour," Rose said, expressing solidarity with the Polish people and offering condolences to the families of those killed.

Despite the rapid response from authorities, major questions remained unanswered Saturday evening.

Investigators had not immediately released the suspect's identity, established a motive or disclosed the identities of the victims. It was also unclear whether the gunman had specifically targeted anyone or whether the victims were selected entirely at random.

Authorities confirmed that shots had also been reported near Sławkowska Street, while police were operating on nearby Dietla Street as the investigation expanded beyond the immediate area of the Main Square.

The attack comes at a particularly unsettling time for Poland, which has recently experienced several disturbing acts of violence, including a fatal stabbing near Warsaw last month and a series of attacks involving schools.

However, authorities have not established any connection between those incidents and Saturday's shooting.

For now, Kraków is left confronting the aftermath of a horrifying attack that transformed one of Europe's most recognizable historic squares into a major crime scene.

With five people dead, more than a dozen injured and a suspect in police custody, investigators now face the difficult task of determining what drove the gunman to unleash such violence in the middle of a crowded public space.

For the families of those killed and the victims fighting for their lives, the consequences of Saturday's violence will extend far beyond the crime scene.
