Thousands of anti-government protesters continued to face off with riot police in central Kiev on Wednesday morning as a pall of smoke rose from fires burning out of control in several buildings. The Trade Union building on Independence Square, used for some time as a protest headquarters, continued to burn after being set alight late on Tuesday. Authorities have reported at least 20 dead in ongoing clashes, nine of them police officers. More than 300 people received treatment for injuries in Kiev alone.
