A 38-year-old man was shot dead by police officers who opened fire in a disturbing confrontation captured on body cameras.
Nicolas Sanchez was killed on February 21 at a gas station in Roy, Utah, after a convenience store clerk called the police reporting suspicious behavior.
Sanchez, who police said was armed, was initially reluctant to speak to the police, asking, 'What have I done?' in a video recently released by police.
He agreed to step aside for questioning, only to run off, prompting one officer to tackle him to the ground while the second cop released a long stream of gunfire.
The officer who wrestled Sanchez to the ground then shot him dead, thinking it was the 38-year-old - and not his fellow officer - who opened fire, an attorney for the police said.
A clerk called the police fearing Sanchez was going to rob the convenience store on South 1900 West Street.
Sanchez left his car running in the parking lot and acted 'suspiciously' inside, according to Heather White, an attorney hired by the police department.
When two police officers arrived at the scene and asked Sanchez to step aside for questioning, he leaned against the door of the convenience store and asked, 'Really? What do you want to talk to me for?'
The police officer said: 'I will let you know. Come over here. We got called on you.'
When Sanchez agreed to go with them, the second officer directed him to keep his hands out of his pockets.
Sanchez pulled his hands out and lifted his shirt, saying, 'Sorry, look, I ain't got nothing.'
But police spotted a gun - prompting both officers to approach him, warning: 'Do not reach for your pockets'.
Sanchez then yelled, 'What? What are you doing?' before turning and running off.
One police officer gave chase and wrestled Sanchez to the ground, while a second cop tailing them opened fire, shooting once before pausing and pulling the trigger again at least a dozen times, according to the recording.
The officer who was on the ground with Sanchez grabbed hold of the 38-year-old's gun, leaving him unarmed, White said.
When he heard the gunfire from the other cop, he assumed it was Sanchez shooting with another weapon, White said.
The cop who wrestled Sanchez to the ground then used the 38-year-old's gun and shot him, White said.
Sanchez, a convicted felon, was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The attorney defended the cops, whose identities have not been revealed, saying: 'Sanchez was argumentative. He was unwilling to talk to them.
'We believe that the officers acted appropriately. They did what they were trained and expected to do,' she added.
The two officers have been placed on paid leave while an investigation is still ongoing.
