On Saturday March 25th, YouTube yanked advertising support for independent creators. This has also affected TomoNews.
Revenue graph for our main channel, TomoNews US, has fallen 80%. It’s the same for the Thai version of TomoNews, the Korean version, the Bahasa version in Indonesia, and the Mandarin version in Taiwan, where we live.
YouTube has even hit our NewsDirect channel … I bet you didn’t know this … but our animators produce high-quality graphics distributed directly to more than 50 media clients around the world.
YouTube has yanked advertising support for this channel … though it contains content that more than 50 broadcast and digital clients have deemed suitable and “advertising safe†for their audiences.
Quite simply, YouTube doesn’t want any of its creators discussing the news.
More specifically, this is what YouTube won’t support.
That really horrible terrorist attack in London last week DEMONETIZED!
Same goes for a recent terrorist attack in Germany. DEMONETIZED!
YouTube also doesn’t like you providing news about hate crimes … like the man who gunned down two immigrant Indian engineers, killing one. DEMONETIZED!
Or the Muslim lady who filmed a man berating her in a coffee shop. DEMONETIZED!
Remember when Kim Jong-un assassinated his half-brother in Malaysia? DEMONETIZED!
Or when the King of Thailand died? DEMONETIZED!
An animation about Donald Trump’s presidential limo … his limo for christ’s sake … DEMONETIZED!
And what if you make a video about how that video was demonetized … also, DEMONETIZED!
Here’s the thing YouTube. The world is an unpleasant place. Bad things happen. … People do bad things.
As a news company, it’s our job to tell you what those things are.
It’s not our job to pretend the world is perfect and rosy because you think this is what advertisers want.
You know YouTube … we’re not going to sell your lies.
We’ve created a new playlist … it’s called “YouTube Demonetization of Videos†and it shows you every video YouTube has demonetized.
It’s not complete, because we have 18,000 videos we need to sort through … but this will give you an idea of exactly the types of things YouTube doesn’t want you to watch … the things it won’t support.
And to our audience, thanks for watching. Keep watching this space. If YouTube doesn’t fix itself and we need to find another home, you’ll be the first to know.
