CCTV: Knife thug mugs stranger before stabbing a policeman

A teenage thug who mugged a stranger before stabbing a policeman as he tried to flee has been jailed for four years.
Muhibur Rahman, 19, was spotted by the officer as he robbed a 20-year-old man of his phone at knifepoint outside a Tesco Express store on a busy main road.
He held a knife to the victim's throat before throwing him to the ground four months ago on the high street in Stoke Newington, North London.
Police Sergeant Carroll Weeden, who was patrolling the area on January 11, chased Rahman who tried to escape on a bicycle at about 5.40pm.
When she caught up with him and tried to arrest him, he stabbed her in the arm. But she carried on chasing him - and arrested him with the help of onlookers.
Sgt Weeden's skin was not punctured but she suffered extensive bruising. Rahman, from Stoke Newington, admitted robbery, possession of a knife and assault with intent to resist arrest.
After he was jailed at Wood Green Crown Court, Sgt Carroll Weeden said: 'I am pleased that the court was able to recognise the gravity, seriousness and effects of knife crime on the victim of the knife-point robbery and me as a police officer.
'Police face increasing danger on a daily basis, and without fear or favour, put themselves in the line of danger regularly, with the risk of facing the gravest of consequences in doing so.
'I believe that I had a very lucky escape that night, and I am acutely aware that things could have been much more serious. I am immensely proud of the colleagues who came to my aid. I would like to thank members of the public who helped me that night and who showed tremendous courage, bravery and public spirit.'
Detective Inspector Paul Ridley, who led the investigation by Hackney CID, said: 'Sergeant Weeden showed enormous courage in the most adverse circumstances.
'It was only through sheer fortune that the knife blade did not make contact with the officer's face or neck which could have proved fatal.
'CCTV footage and the radio transmission made by Sergeant Weedon on the night demonstrate the immediate and unexpected adversity that police officers can encounter.
'Despite the over-arching risk that confronted her, she was still able to capture and detain this violent offender.
'The sentence imposed by the judge and the comments made reflect that any individual carrying and using knives, especially against police officers, will be jailed for a considerable period.'
Rahman was handed three years for the robbery, a one-year sentence to run consecutively for the assault, and a three-month concurrent sentence for the knife.
Sgt Weeden had been working her third day in the Stoke Newington and Clissold Park neighbourhood policing team when she was attacked.
The mother-of-two said: 'I was walking towards the police station and I could hear loud noises, but they can be quite common in and around that area.
'It got my attention, so I turned round, and I could see Rahman trying to get on his bike running towards me.
'I chased him and noticed another member of the public chasing him too, and I managed to pin him against the window of a barber shop.
'That was when he took a lunge with the knife in a stabbing motion - he just missed the member of the public, but he caught me on the arm and drew down.
'I thought I'd been stabbed, I was stunned. He took that lunge with intent and struck my arm through my thick coat and Met vest.
'I don't know how I wasn't stabbed. It took a pounding and it was bruised and is still quite painful, but I'm very fortunate.
'He ran off again so I chased and up ahead, another member of the public had detained him and I handcuffed him.
'It was really reassuring that members of the public stepped forwards and assisted, it showed the really good public spirit of Hackney.'
Sgt Weeden, who has been a police officer for nearly nine years, said she has been assaulted before, but never with 'that level of violence'.
She added: 'I've been assaulted before but not in Hackney.
'Once, we detained a suspect who was high on Class A drugs and when I tried to restrain him, I ended up with a dislocated knee which needed major surgery.
'He tried to bite my colleague too - all of these things do happen. But I've never had someone look me in the eye with that level of violence before that close.'
Sgt Weeden worked in youth justice, mental health outreach, victim support and occupational therapy before joining the Metropolitan Police in 2008.
She believes that it is 'becoming more normalised' for youths to carry weapons, and says a 'multi-faceted' approach is needed to eradicate knife crime.
She added: 'I personally think it's becoming more normalised for people to pick up knives.
'When I worked in youth justice, we used to do cognitive behavioural therapy with young people to encourage them to think before they act, but with knife crime there's no thinking - it's become a normalised accessory.
'If there is any thinking, there is going to be premeditation like in this case.
'Any approach to it is multi-faceted - stop and search is a good tool when used proportionally and effectively, and it's a bigger issue than that for other agencies.
'We as police officers can't deal with it in isolation - we have to work with the community and engagement opportunities.
'Fear of crime is getting worse too, and that perpetuates people carrying knives. There's that link with mental health too.'
Sgt Weeden praised her colleagues' bravery, and says there is a real fear that she will not return from work amid rising violent crime.
She said: 'I've seen other officers confront people with machetes, and I see how brave and courageous they are on a daily basis with the smallest of things.
'Rahman could easily have taken a life or two with the simplest and smallest of actions, and I don't think that message gets through.
'There's a ripple effect of consequences for people's families, and it makes you think every time you leave for work 'am I going to come home?'
'It's the first time something to this level has happened to me, and it really does make you think.
'I am a police officer, and I did sign up for this job, but I'm a human being too and no one would sign up to that level of harm or risk - it's not a free reign to perpetuate violence against officers, and I'm equally a mum, daughter and aunt.'
She spoke as the Met Police launched an 80-strong task force to tackle the epidemic of soaring knife crime.
A squad of covert and uniform officers is to be deployed to trouble spots at a moment's notice to curb flare ups of violence across the capital.
The moves comes as police are battling a 24 per cent rise in knife crime in London amid a stream of stabbings and murders.
