A father and son have told of their terrifying ordeal where a hammer-wielding thug threatened them with a kitchen knife while screaming, "I’m going to f****** kill you".
Boss Kelly and his father were working at a building site when they noticed signs of a break-in.
After leaving the area and then returning to the site in Withernsea 30 minutes later, a man armed with a hammer and a "10-inch blade" chased them down the street while threatening to kill them.
Property developer Boss said: “I was driving in my car and my dad was following me down in the van,” said Boss, a property developer.
“Then the guy came out of nowhere and started hitting my bonnet with the hammer and screaming that he was going to stab me.
“My dad got out and the man kept shouting ‘I’m going to f****** kill you’. This woman with him tried to diffuse the situation and get the knife out of his hand and calm him down. There were kids watching as this man was waving around this 10in knife.
“We called the police, but they didn’t turn up for three hours, so we just watched him walk back into his house a couple of streets away.”
Boss and his dad were working on a site of new-build flats in Walter Street, and were heading back into the building when they noticed somebody had broken in.
“We opened up the site and saw muddy footprints and it obvious somebody had been in there,” he said.
“I looked for my saw and noticed it was gone, and when we got to the back door we saw a box of stuff ready to be collected, including my saw.
“We waited at the back, and minutes later the guy came back to get the rest of the stuff he was stealing. We then ran after him and tried to detain him but he got away.”
Boss said the experience was traumatising and now faces paying for repairs to his car.
“There are hammer marks all over my bonnet,” he said.
“We called the police saying we were being attacked by a guy with a massive knife and they still took three hours to turn up. We rang 999 to see where they were and just got told off for ringing the emergency number.
"I don’t want to think about would have happened if he had got near me and my dad.”
A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: "We were called shortly before 6pm on Monday, June 26 with reports of a disturbance on Queen Street in Withernsea. Two men have reported to have been injured in the incident.
"Investigations are under way to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident."
Anyone with information should call Humberside Police on 101, quoting log 421 of June 26.
