A shivering newborn baby was discovered in an abandoned shopping bag and was so cold she was 'blue all over'.
Passerby Mukesh Verma was on his way to pick up his son when he spotted the bag and saw it moving on its own.
He looked inside and found the tiny tot and immediately called the police in the Indian city of Lucknow.
The baby was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
Doctors believe the tiny girl was about two days old and needed help to feed.
The hospital’s medical superintendent Mr Bhargava said the baby weighed in at five pounds 11 ounces and that remained in intensive care.
Ajit Kushwaha, the coordinator for Child Line in the city told local media: "The Child Welfare Committee has ordered the girl to be handed over to a state welfare home."
It was not clear whether authorities were hoping to trace the baby’s parents.
In Colombia an heroic policewoman stepped in to breastfeed a newborn baby who was discovered abandoned in the woods.
Officer and new mum Luisa Urrea had been called to a remote forest after locals found the starving tot in the undergrowth with part of her umbilical cord still attached.
She has been credited by doctors with saving the little one's life, with doctors saying the tiny girl would have succumbed to starvation and hypothermia had she not stepped in.
