This is the heartbreaking moment a new born baby was found dumped in long grass with its umbilical cord still attached.
The infant was rescued by engineer, Alexandre da Silva Dias de Freitas, on his way to work on Monday morning and police were swiftly imformed.
Officers from Rio de Janeiro rushed the little boy, who weighed just 5lbs 6 ounces, to a nearby hospital where he is recovering in an intensive care neo-natal unit.
An investigation is now underway to discover who abandoned the baby boy, after he was discovered at 6.30am in grass under steps by a busy road.
The officers who rushed the child to the Maternidade Alexander Fleming Hospital later posed for pictures alongside Alexandre with the baby they helped save.
