Elon Musk has shared the first glimpse of the Falcon Heavy rocket from his company SpaceX.
The massive rocket is situated inside SpaceX's hangar at Pad 39A of NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. It will form the basis of Musk's planned missions to colonise Mars.
The Falcon Heavy was showcased in three separate photos that Musk tweeted out to his 16 million followers today, Wednesday, December 20.
"Falcon Heavy at the Cape," was all Musk tweeted.
The Falcon Heavy is essentially a souped up version of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket booster, which is regularly used to carry supplies to the International Space Station.
It is composed of three Falcon 9s strapped together, with a total of 27 engines generating more than 5 million pounds of thrust - equal to approximately eighteen 747 aircraft.
It is capable of carrying more than 63,800kg into lower Earth orbit and 16,800kg all the way to Mars. By comparison, the Falcon 9 can carry 22,800kg into lower Earth orbit.
The Falcon Heavy was designed from the outset to carry humans into space. Passengers will travel inside a Dragon space capsule, attached to the top of the rocket booster.
SpaceX plans to use it to fly two tourists around the Moon as early as next year, and send spacecraft to the surface of Mars in 2020.
