Former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told Fox News’ Chris Wallace on Sunday that detaining migrant children, who cross the border illegally, is a “necessary” step.
Wallace showed Johnson 2014 images of detained children from during the Obama administration, in which Johnson served.
“We expanded family detention,” he said, explaining that they initially did not have enough beds to house families.
“We thought it was necessary at the time. I still believe it is necessary to maintain a certain capability for families,” Johnson added. “We can’t have catch-and-release.”
The former DHS secretary pointed out that the department deported more than 1 million people during his tenure. However, Johnson called for a humane policy to deal with border-crossers.
