Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday, dodged on whether he supports getting rid of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), after Democratic New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon called the agency a “terrorist organization.”
Tapper reported that “more than a dozen Democratic congressional candidates” endorsed abolishing ICE, and he asked Sanders if he sided with them and Nixon.
“I think what we need is to create policies which deal with immigration in a rational way,” Sanders responded, dodging the substance of the question. “A rational way is not locking children up in detention centers or separating them from their mothers.”
The senator called for President Trump to work with Congress to create a “rational program” for immigration. Despite his request, it’s unlikely to happen, given his and Sen. Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) aversion to compromise.
