Hurricane Lane is lashing Hawaii with destructive winds and torrential rain - flooding homes and roads and setting off landslides - with the worst still to come.
Despite weakening to a Category 3 hurricane, the monster storm remained a major threat to life as locals and tourists hunkered down in homes, hotels and emergency shelters.
Rivers were turned into raging streams after Lane battered Hawaii's Big Island with more than 24ins of rain in just 24 hours, causing "castastrophic" flooding.
The volcanic archipelago in the Pacific is now bracing for 120mph winds, 25ft waves, heavier rain and a life-threatening storm surge as the hurricane spins closer to its shores.
