A 55-year-old man died Monday morning after apparently suffering a medical emergency while driving, which caused his car to shoot off the road and slam into a gas station convenience store in Lawrenceville.
The incident, which occurred around 10 a.m. at the Exxon station on Lawrenceville Highway, also injured a woman who was struck by the car as she stood outside the store, according to Lawrenceville Police Department Lt. Jake Parker, spokesman for the department.
She was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, though suffered a broken hip and possibly other fractures, Parker said.
“The car was on (Highway) 29 coming northbound and went through the intersection, through the guide wire and the (telephone) pole, caught the barricade (by a gas pump) and flipped on its side,” he said. “It hit a parked car, knocked it into a minivan as it continued into the store and struck a pedestrian that was outside.”
Parker said investigators are not yet sure what sort of medical emergency the driver suffered and estimated the car was going about 70 mph in a 45 mph zone when it veered from the road.
Shafquat Chaudhary, the owner of the convenience store, spoke with his employees and customers who were inside, who said the building shook when the car struck it.
Parker said the woman who was injured is expected to recover.
Police have not yet released the deceased’s name, as they are in the process of notifying next of kin.
