Gwinnett County police say they are investigating a use of force complaint after a video was posted showing a white Gwinnett County police officer shocking a Black woman with a Taser.
Investigators released a statement about the video, saying there was more leading up to the incident than the video shows.
Police said they were called out to a home along Summit Creek Way in Loganville after someone called 911 saying two people had thrown a bottle at her car.
“She also said the people threatened to assault her and beat her 9-year-old child,” the statement said.
Investigators said the incident with the bottle being thrown at the car was caught on surveillance video.
“That video shows a woman come and retrieve the bottle from the yard before police arrived. The complainant directed the officer to the house where she believed the suspects were staying,” the statement said.
It is at this point that the viral video picks up. The posts over the video claim the officer responded to the home for the women being too loud.
The video shows the Gwinnett County police officer speaking with three women on the front porch of the home when one woman tells the officer that he is on private property and needs to leave. That woman has been identified as Kyndesia Smith.
The officer then tells Smith to turn around and that she is being put under arrest. Smith tells him no and proceeds to step behind another woman, who is sitting in a chair on the porch.
That’s when the officer grabs Smith and the two get into a tussle. The officer lets go of Smith and grabs his Taser, telling Smith to get on the ground.
When Smith refuses, the officer warns her that he is going to shock her. When she still refuses, the officer then shocks Smith with the Taser, before eventually putting her in handcuffs.
“After she was placed in handcuffs, she kicked the officer and continued to be uncooperative,” the statement from police said.
The department confirmed it is investigating the incident and is taking the allegations seriously.
“The police department takes all use of force seriously. All use of force cases are administratively reviewed through the chain of command. An investigation into this incident is being conducted. The officer has been placed in an administrative role pending the outcome of the internal investigation. We have a long history of being transparent public servants to the citizens of Gwinnett County. We will continue to keep our citizens up to date with information on this case as the facts are collected.”
