BRIDGEPORT — A city man has been charged with arson after officials say he was seen with a gasoline can on a boat with a Trump flag at the East End Yacht Club.
Olajuwon Johnson, 25, of Bridgeport, was charged with third-degree arson. His bond was set at $10,000.
The charges stemmed from a 911 call around 2:30 p.m. Monday.
The caller reported a person with an apparent can of gasoline on a boat at the yacht club that had a flag on it supporting President Donald Trump, according to Scott Appleby, the city’s director of emergency management and emergency communications.
He said the caller told the dispatcher he smelled smoke “and noticed that a boat cooler was on fire on the same boat,” putting out the flames himself before calling 911.
While police units were en route to the call, a description of the suspect was released. A man matching his description, later identified as Johnson, was detained in the area, Appleby said. The caller positively identified Johnson as the person he saw, Appleby said.
