Providence police on Wednesday released a trove of body-camera videos offering a look at their response to a July 9 incident that prompted the attorney general's office to launch a criminal investigation of officers' use of force.
The 41 videos, totaling more than seven hours' worth of footage, show officers chasing three teenagers driving a BMW through Providence, the teens allegedly pointing BB guns at people and police.
One officer pursuing the vehicle can be heard saying, “Looks like he just pointed something at me," then, “Looks like he almost just came into collision with another vehicle.”
Further into the videos, after the BMW — which police said was driven by a 16-year-old with two 15-year-old passengers — has evidently crashed into a fire hydrant.
As police apprehend one of the teens — all of whom were arrested and charged — the incident becomes violent.
One officer can be seen punching one of the subjects multiple times. Eventually, the teen's face is partially shown, bloodied. An officer then looks at the teen, who at that point has his hands cuffed behind his back, and spits in his direction
Two of the officers involved have been suspended with pay, according to a news release from Lindsay Lague, a spokeswoman for the office of Public Safety Commissioner Steven Paré.
