A man has been shot dead by police in a McDonald’s carpark south of Brisbane after he threatened officers with a knife.
Queensland Police were called to the fast-food franchise on Chambers Flats Road in Marsden at about 4.40pm on Friday “after reports a man had threatened people at a number of businesses with a knife”.
“Police attempted to negotiate with man however he threatened them with the knife and police shot him,” police said in a statement.
The man was taken to Logan Hospital but died a short time later.
Horrifying video footage of the incident and the man being shot by police, which was captured by a bystander, has since emerged.
Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said a female McDonald’s worker was being held at knifepoint when officers arrived at the scene.
They ordered the man to drop his weapon.
"Police called on this person numerous times to put down the knife but [he] refused, then when that person lunged at police he was shot a number of times," she said.
"If you have the training like I have and all police officers, knives are just as dangerous as guns if not more so.”
Investigations into the event are continuing with an overview by the Ethical Standards Command.
