A horrific scene unfolded inside a Pennsylvania Olive Garden last week when an employee died after jumping headfirst into a deep fryer during the middle of a shift, according to police and emergency call records.
The shocking incident happened Friday afternoon at the Williamsport Olive Garden as diners and staff were inside the restaurant. Authorities say the unidentified worker removed his clothing in the kitchen before diving into a vat of boiling oil.
Panicked 911 calls captured the chaos that followed. In one call obtained by The Smoking Gun, a dispatcher told officers there was a burn victim at the restaurant, describing people screaming and confusion inside the building. Another emergency call was more direct, reporting that a man had gone headfirst into the fryers.
First responders rushed to the scene just after 4 p.m. The man was transported to a nearby hospital with catastrophic injuries and later died. A second ambulance was dispatched after a female employee suffered minor burns while trying to stop him, joining other workers and at least one customer who attempted to intervene.
Pennsylvania State Police later confirmed the incident is being investigated as a suicide attempt. Officials declined to release the man’s identity or additional details, saying they were withholding information out of respect for the individual and his family.
The disturbing episode left employees shaken and stunned customers trying to process what they had just witnessed. Authorities have not released further information, and the restaurant has not publicly commented on the tragedy.
The incident stands as one of the most graphic and unsettling workplace deaths in recent memory, unfolding not in isolation, but in the middle of a busy restaurant surrounded by coworkers and patrons.
