Teen Gunman Opens Fire On A School In Southern Thailand

A teenage gunman has been arrested after allegedly launching a terrifying attack at a school in southern Thailand, leaving at least three people injured, killing the school’s director, and sparking a tense hostage situation.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday, February 11, at Patongprathankiriwat School in Hat Yai, a city in Songkhla Province near the Malaysian border, according to reports from The Bangkok Post, The Nation, and Sky News.
Authorities say the 18-year-old suspect stormed the school shortly after classes had been dismissed, appearing “angry” as he entered the building. Witnesses later reported hearing several gunshots, according to Thailand’s provincial Public Relations Department, cited by The Washington Post.
During the attack, the gunman allegedly injured at least three people and held several individuals hostage, sending shockwaves through the local community. The Nation reported that the school’s director was killed during the violence.
Royal Thai Police confirmed that the suspect was captured alive following a rapid response by officers. A photo shared on the police’s official Facebook page showed the moment of his arrest, with authorities confirming that all hostages were rescued safely.
“The perpetrator has been captured,” Songkhla deputy superintendent Wichian Soboon told Reuters.
According to Viral Press, officers detained the suspect while he was still carrying an M4 submachine gun, underscoring the seriousness of the threat posed during the standoff.
Local media reported that the attacker had allegedly been harboring resentment toward the school after a teacher disciplined his younger sister, a grievance that may have fueled the deadly outburst.
The shooting has reignited concerns over gun violence in Thailand, where firearms are relatively accessible compared to many other countries in the region. Sky News noted that the nation is still haunted by the 2022 massacre, when a former police officer killed 36 people, including 22 children, in a gun-and-knife attack at a nursery in eastern Thailand.
The investigation into Wednesday’s attack remains ongoing as authorities work to establish a full timeline and motive behind the deadly school assault.
