A devastating crash involving an Iowa Lakes Community College team bus left one person dead and 32 others injured Wednesday morning, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
Authorities say the single-vehicle crash happened just after 11 a.m. on Highway 4 near Twin Lakes, where the bus — carrying members of the college baseball team — veered off the roadway during a trip to North Arkansas College for a series scheduled later this week.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and found a chaotic situation as student-athletes and staff were pulled from the wrecked vehicle. The impact was severe enough that multiple medical helicopters were dispatched to transport the most seriously injured victims to trauma centers for immediate surgery.
Local agencies, including the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and Rockwell City Police, assisted in rescuing passengers and directing them to area hospitals.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
