A dramatic social media video claiming to show the “first quadriplegic healed” has gone viral, igniting global attention and intense debate over a groundbreaking experimental treatment developed in Brazil.
The man at the center of the footage is Bruno Drummond, identified as Patient 01 in early trials of a regenerative drug known as polylaminin. Drummond was previously quadriplegic following a severe spinal cord injury but is now seen walking unaided and even pushing a wheelchair in the widely shared clip.
“It's the guy pushing the wheelchair. A miracle,” the post declares.
According to researchers, Drummond regained movement after undergoing treatment developed by Brazilian scientist Tatiana Sampaio, whose work focuses on repairing damaged spinal cord tissue using a placental-derived compound designed to act as a biological bridge for nerve regeneration.
The video also features former Olympic gymnast Laís Souza, who was left quadriplegic following a skiing accident in 2014. In the footage, Souza is shown seated in a wheelchair as Drummond walks beside her. Supporters say she hopes to be the next patient to benefit from the experimental therapy.
Brazil has emerged in 2025 and 2026 as a focal point for spinal cord injury research, with early stage trials of polylaminin reportedly showing promising results in cases of both quadriplegia and paraplegia. Researchers say the drug works by creating a scaffold that encourages damaged nerve fibers to reconnect, a long sought breakthrough in neurological medicine.
However, medical experts caution that the treatment remains experimental and has not yet undergone large scale peer reviewed clinical trials. While the images have been hailed online as miraculous, scientists warn that isolated cases and viral videos are not substitutes for rigorous scientific validation.
Still, the footage has captured public imagination, particularly among families affected by spinal cord injuries, who see in Drummond’s recovery a glimpse of what could be possible.
