Another flashpoint in America’s escalating culture war erupted inside a fast-food restaurant, this time at a Smoothie King location in Ann Arbor, where employees were caught on video refusing service to a couple because the husband was wearing a hoodie supporting Donald Trump.
The now-viral clip shows the tense standoff unfolding at the counter as staff tell the couple they feel “uncomfortable” serving them due to the pro-Trump apparel. The woman filming the encounter immediately pushes back, accusing the employees of political discrimination and demanding an explanation for why her family is being denied service.
The video quickly spread online, igniting outrage and reigniting debates over free expression, political bias, and whether everyday businesses are becoming ideological enforcement zones.
Under federal law, political affiliation is not a protected class in public accommodations, meaning businesses are generally allowed to refuse service based on political expression. But here’s where things get interesting. Ann Arbor’s local civil rights ordinance explicitly prohibits discrimination based on political beliefs, potentially opening the door for legal consequences if the couple chooses to pursue action.
