The individual at the center of the storm is Janiyah Mishelle Williams, who was filmed refusing to serve customers at a local Smoothie King after allegedly spotting a hoodie supporting Donald Trump. The footage quickly spread across social media, igniting a fierce debate over political bias, professionalism, and basic consumer rights.
Rather than backing down, Williams has since doubled, and tripled, down.
She launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe, openly boasting about refusing service to Trump supporters while portraying herself as the victim. In her campaign, she claims she was filmed without permission, says she is a minor, and alleges she is now being targeted by “hate comments” as a result of the video going viral.
Critics say the fundraiser is not about accountability or protection, but about profiting from political discrimination.
Adding fuel to the fire, Williams has posted additional videos defending her actions, framing the incident as a moral crusade. In one clip, she characterizes the situation as “good versus evil” and calls on others to “stand up,” language many see as a justification for denying service based on political beliefs. She has also urged followers to mass report the original video on Facebook, claiming it was taken without her permission.
That claim has drawn skepticism. Filming in public facing commercial spaces is generally legal, and being on the clock while interacting with customers typically eliminates expectations of privacy. More importantly, critics argue, refusing service based on political affiliation is discrimination, regardless of which side is doing it.
The larger concern now centers on whether crowdfunding platforms should allow money to be raised from incidents involving open political bias. Many are calling on GoFundMe to take action, warning that allowing such campaigns sets a dangerous precedent, rewarding ideological enforcement at the expense of equal treatment.
