A terrified woman dangling from the edge of a skyscraper was seconds from certain death until heroic police officers lunged forward, seized her by the hair and dragged her back to safety in a heart-stopping drama that has left the world gasping.

The extraordinary scenes unfolded on the rooftop of a high-rise in Seoul’s upmarket Gangnam district near the famous station, where the woman, dressed in a pale outfit. had been perched on the ledge for nearly two hours.

Negotiators pleaded with her to come down as emergency crews raced to the scene and laid out air mattresses far below. But at the critical moment she began to slip – and that was when the special operations officers made their move.

One officer threw himself flat on the rooftop, reached over the edge and locked his grip on the woman’s long dark hair. A second officer scrambled to seize her arm and torso. Together they hauled the struggling woman upwards, her legs kicking wildly in the air as the terrifying footage shows her body swinging against the side of the building.

Witnesses watching from nearby streets and capturing the moment on their phones could scarcely believe what they were seeing. For agonising seconds, the woman hung suspended more than 60 metres above the ground before the officers finally succeeded in pulling her fully onto the roof.

The dramatic rescue, which took place on 2 May 2025 in the Yeoksam-dong area, has once again gone viral after the grainy but crystal-clear video resurfaced online this week, racking up millions of views and leaving viewers around the globe in stunned silence.

Police later confirmed the woman was taken to hospital for assessment and is understood to be receiving care. Officers from the National Police Agency’s elite unit were praised for their split-second bravery after a tense stand-off that had stretched on for almost 120 minutes.

One source close to the operation described the moment the first officer grabbed the woman’s hair as the only thing that prevented a fatal fall. “He didn’t hesitate,” the source said. “If he’d waited another second it would have been too late.”The video, originally filmed by bystanders and later shared widely on social media. shows the full heart-pounding sequence: the woman hanging by her fingertips, the sudden dive by the officers, the desperate struggle, and finally the collective sigh of relief as she is dragged to safety.

It is a miracle she survived. And it is a reminder of the extraordinary courage of those who risk everything in the face of tragedy.

South Korean authorities have not released the woman’s identity or further details of what drove her to the rooftop that afternoon. But the images of the hair-grabbing rescue will not soon be forgotten.
