Beachgoers in Mexico were left stunned after two enormous deep-sea “doomsday fish” mysteriously washed up on the same stretch of coastline, an event experts say is almost unheard of.
The bizarre discovery occurred in Cabo San Lucas, where witnesses captured video of the long, silver creatures thrashing in the shallows near the beach.
The animals were identified as Oarfish, one of the ocean’s most elusive and mysterious species.
Often referred to as “doomsday fish,” the ribbon-like creatures can grow to an astonishing 30 feet in length, making them among the longest bony fish in the world.
Despite their massive size, oarfish are rarely seen by humans because they typically live at depths of around 3,000 feet in the open ocean.
Video from the scene shows people gathering along the shoreline as the first massive fish appeared near the sand.
But the moment quickly became even more extraordinary.
According to a description shared with the footage, a second oarfish was spotted near the shore just moments after people helped the first one.
“Just as they finished helping the first one, they spotted another oarfish near the shore,” the description explained.
“Seeing even one is extremely rare. Seeing two in the same place is almost unheard of.”
Local observers attempted to guide the enormous creatures back toward deeper water as crowds watched in amazement.
Experts say sightings of oarfish along that coastline have historically been exceptionally rare, with only a handful recorded over the past several centuries.
The appearance of the animals has also fueled speculation online due to the species’ long-standing nickname.
In Japanese folklore, oarfish are sometimes called “doomsday fish” because their rare appearances near the surface have historically been linked by legend to impending earthquakes or natural disasters.
Scientists, however, say there is no proven evidence that the fish can predict seismic activity.
Still, the simultaneous appearance of two such creatures in the same location has left many observers astonished.
For those lucky enough to witness it, the moment offered a rare glimpse of a deep-sea giant that almost never emerges from the darkness of the ocean’s depths.
