Rapper Afroman, best known for the all-time classic Because I Got High, is headed to trial in a civil lawsuit filed by seven deputies from the Adams County Sheriff's Office.
And the reason might be the most ridiculous legal beef of the year.
Back in 2022, deputies executed a raid at Afroman’s house while investigating claims of drug trafficking and kidnapping. Sounds serious. Except there was one small problem. After the raid, no charges were filed.
Zero. Nothing. The investigation went absolutely nowhere.
Afroman happened to have security cameras all over his property, so the entire raid was caught on video. And instead of just letting the footage sit on a hard drive somewhere, he did what any internet-savvy rapper would do.
He turned the clips into music videos.
In the videos, the footage from the raid plays while Afroman basically roasts the entire situation, poking fun at what he calls the “botched” operation. At one point the officers are literally shown wandering around his house on camera while the song plays over the footage.
Now those same deputies are suing him.
According to the lawsuit, the officers claim Afroman used their likeness and personas in the videos without permission. They say the videos caused them “humiliation, ridicule, mental distress, and loss of reputation.”
Which… I mean… making a music video out of your failed raid will probably do that.
The deputies are seeking $25,000 per count in damages.
Meanwhile Afroman’s defense is basically the most internet-era argument imaginable. The footage came from his own home security cameras, on his own property, during a raid that ultimately produced no charges.
And now the entire thing is heading to trial.
